Dr. Dave Whitaker
President
Dr. Dave Whitaker - President
Early Life and Education
Church ministry is woven into the fabric of Dave’s life. A “preacher’s kid” born in Iowa, Dave grew up in the SF Bay Area's East Bay town of Pleasanton.
After receiving undergraduate and seminary degrees at Bob Jones University, Dave served as an associate pastor of his home church in San Ramon, CA, and then senior pastor of Heart to Heart Bible Church (Moon Valley Bible) in Phoenix, AZ. During this time, he received a Doctor of Ministries degree from Northland International University.
Leadership Roles and Service
Dave’s burden to return to the Bay Area led him to become the lead pastor of Morgan Hill Bible Church in 2004. There, he also served as:
- A chaplain with the Morgan Hill Police Department.
- The Executive Director of Next Generation Churches in Northern California/Nevada, one of eight regions of churches in CBAmerica (now Venture Church Network).
- Dave continues to serve on the Western Seminary Board of Trustees.
Current Role and Family
In September 2020, Dave became the full-time president of Venture Church Network (formerly CBAmerica). Dave and his wife, Lanette, moved to Greenville, SC, and have been married for 44 years. Their daughter Kaylan lives in Brooklyn, NY, and so does their son, Jonathan, his wife Carrie, and granddaughters Sylvie and Annie.
Personal Interests and Passion
Dave enjoys hanging out with family and friends, reading, playing golf, and playing with his Apple gadgets. Even more, Dave loves communicating the Word and is passionate about seeing local churches and pastors flourishing in the gospel, connecting people into a vital relationship with Jesus Christ.

Rev. Randy Brandt - Biography
Military Career and Chaplaincy
Chaplain Brandt began his military career in 1976, enlisting in the United States Air Force as a Dietary Technician right out of high school. After a spiritual conversion he exited active duty in 1980, joined the Air National Guard as an Air Force Cook and attended Bible College and Seminary in Denver, CO. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Chaplain Candidate, while attending Denver Seminary in 1988. He was called to active duty as an Army Chaplain in preparation for Desert Shield/Desert Storm in January of 1991 and served his first Chaplain assignment with the 17th Signal Battalion, Frankfurt Germany and Kitzingen, Germany (1991-1993).

Rev. Thomas E. Gidley

Rev. Thomas Gidley - Biography
Early Life and Education
Thomas was born in Morgantown, West Virginia. In the summer of 1985, while in high school, Thomas had his spiritual conversion, resulting in a lifelong pursuit of serving Christ.
In 1988, Thomas enlisted as a Chaplain Assistant in the United States Army. Upon completing his initial active-duty enlistment in 1991, he subsequentially transferred directly into the West Virginia National Guard. He attended West Virginia University, graduating with a BA in History. While still in the Army Reserves, Thomas continued his studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, graduating with a Master of Divinity.
Military Career and Assignments
Thomas’s military assignments have included:
- {Enlisted} 7th Infantry Division (Light), Fort Ord, California (1988-1991), where he deployed to Panama in support of Operation Just Cause
- The West Virginia Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves (1991-1999)
- In November 1999, Chaplain Gidley was commissioned into the Army’s Chaplain Candidate Program.
In October 2003, he was accessioned to active duty chaplaincy and has served in the following organizations:
- 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas (2003-2006), where he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom
- 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina (2006-2009), where he deployed twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom
- 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Kentucky (2009-2010)
- The 1st Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry Regiment (OPFOR), Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana (2010-2012)
- The Blanchfield Army Community Hospital, Fort Campbell, Kentucky (2013-2016)
- The 10th Mountain Division (LI), Fort Drum, New York (2016-2018)
- The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, Texas (2018-2020)

Chaplain Gidley is married to the former Michelle De Los Santos of Simi Valley, California. They have three adult sons, Philip, Jacob, and Benjamin. Chaplain Gidley’s endorsing agency has always been the Venture Church Network (formerly the Conservative Baptist Association of America). In August 2024, Thomas formally joined Venture Church Network as the new Associate Director of Chaplaincy.
Joyce Mercado

Joyce Mercado - Biography
Early Life and Ministry
Joyce grew up in Alabama in a very committed Christian home. She met her husband, Richard, in college, and upon graduating, they married, and soon after, returned to Richard’s home state of Arizona, where he took a position as his dad’s assistant in the bi-lingual, inner-city church he grew up in. In 2004, God called the Mercados to plant a church in Goodyear, Arizona, and in 2021, that church merged with another church, Mission Church, where they serve today. They have now served in ministry full-time for over 40 years.
Professional Background
Joyce comes to VCN with an extensive background in administrative work. After working in Christian education for eight years, Joyce moved into the political consulting field, where she worked as:

- Project Manager
- Operations Manager
After leaving the political field, Joyce joined the team of a Christian non-profit advocacy group as the Executive Assistant to the President. Her background in ministry, management, and administrative work in both the corporate and non-profit worlds has prepared her for her role as Executive Assistant for Dave.
Family
Joyce and Richard have four grown children, three in Arizona and one in New York City. They enjoy their four grandchildren and love spending as much time with them at every possible opportunity.
Personal Interests and Passion
Joyce enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, walking in the desert foothills, being a grandma, eating out, and traveling. She enjoys meeting new people and encouraging those around her in their walk with God so that they can live victorious, content, committed Christian lives.
