2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

For so many pastors and ministry leaders, this verse feels more relevant now than ever. No seminary could have prepared pastors for the COVID pandemic, street riots, political tension, and all of its lasting impacts. 2020 has left pastors and leaders feeling discouraged and afraid. And yet, God’s precious word reveals to us that we are not given a spirit of fear. It is only two chapters later the Apostle Paul tells his protege Timothy that “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” If we are not to have the spirit of fear even during persecution, doesn’t that mean we shouldn’t be afraid of the unprecedented times we’re in?

In Deuteronomy 31:6, Moses says to Joshua, “Be strong and of good courage.” He repeats this in verse seven and God echos it in verse twenty-three. Then, God repeats these words to Joshua three times in Joshua chapter one in verses six, seven, and nine. He repeats these words because Moses has died and the baton has been handed to Joshua to take Israel to the promised land. I can only imagine how Joshua felt — unprepared, unequipped, and afraid. It’s the same way so many ministry leaders feel today. And yet God says over and over again to not be afraid. Those words are for us just as much as they were for Moses.
