Candle #3: Jesus, the Life
At this point of our Advent readings, we’ve reflected on our longing for a Deliverer, a Savior who will take us from darkness to light. Jesus is not only the one we long for and the light we need, but He is LIFE itself.
Jesus was bold and unashamed in His clear declarations that He is life: the source, embodiment, and giver of life.
To the seeker, Nicodemus, Jesus declared, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
To sisters Mary and Martha, bowed with grief over their brother’s death, Jesus assured them saying, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:25)
To His own disciples, He asserted, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
Decades later, the beloved disciple John, who lived and walked with Jesus, left no room for doubt when he said, “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; He who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (I John 5:11-12)
This Advent reminds us that we can look to many things to give our lives to, but Christ’s advent offers life to us — eternal life forever and abundant life today.
